Choosing a Coffee Experience in Costa Rica

Not every coffee tour is the same. Some are short demonstrations; others take you into the plantation, the mill and a cupping.

Types of experience

  • Demonstration visit: short, explains the process. Good for families.
  • Working farm: walk among the coffee plants and see processing.
  • Cupping: focused on aroma and flavour profiles.
  • Combined: coffee with cacao and sugarcane, common around La Fortuna and Monteverde.

Coffee regions

The Central Valley (Heredia, Alajuela, Grecia), Los Santos and Tarrazú, Naranjo, Turrialba, Monteverde and the northern zone all grow coffee. Day trips from San José usually visit Alajuela, Heredia or Grecia.

When to go

In many areas the harvest runs from late in the year into the first months of the next, depending on altitude. Visits run year-round, but outside the harvest you will see less picking.
