How many days

In one week you can get to know two regions well, for example the Central Valley and La Fortuna, or La Fortuna and a beach. With ten to fourteen days, add a third such as Monteverde, the Central Pacific or the South Caribbean.

Getting around

Shared shuttles are a good middle ground between public buses and a rental car. If you drive, avoid unfamiliar mountain roads after dark and add buffer time.
